The Tainos were the original inhabitants of Puerto Rico. They were indigenous people who lived in small villages and were led by the Indian Chiefs called Caciques. Borikén was the Taino Indians name for Puerto Rico, which is believed to mean the Land of the Valiant and Noble Lord. The Tainos food source consisted of hunting, fishing, and basic agriculture. Some of the foods still used today in Puerto Rican cuisine include cassava, yautía, corn, beans, sweet potatoes, peppers and culantro.
